Spa Ponds Dragons

I recently discovered a place pretty close to me called Spa Ponds, now its not that easy to find being as there is no parking and the only way I could find to get there is via a public footpath leading through a couple of fields I spotted using Google maps, however given that I’ve never had a great deal of luck with dragonflies I was more than pleased with the results.

I did capture a few other things, but the dragons were the best of it and I found out too that they can get very jealous, or at least my little red common darter friend did.

I was busily taking snaps of him (yes he is male by the way, I had him ID’d!) and saw a bee going into a flower I’d been watching, spun round to take a few shots and what happens, well he only went and landed on my head!!  Fine I thought and went back to taking some more shots of him as he’d gone back to the log happy having his point made.

Moving on twenty minutes or so and after narrowly missing being trampled by a horse that hadn’t seen me (I guess the Jack Pyke stuff works as decent camo even in olive green) I’m again taking pics of bees when over shoots my little friend and again lands on my head, by the way its very hard to concentrate with a dragonfly dancing on your head!  So I go back to taking pics of him.

Later on (still taking pics of little red), I spy myself a close flying Southern Hawker (also male) and take a few pictures, well my darter chum didn’t like that one bit so flew over on to my head for a third time!  However this time the interloper seems to like the idea too and decides to join him, well all hell broke loose, a fight ensued and none landed on my head again 🙂

Right then, enough of that drivel and on to the images…
